Finding cures for children's genetic diseases

First Denim Disco declared success

There are plenty of opportunities for Sydney’s fundraising community to celebrate their favourite cause, although not many for kids - however The Denim Disco changed all that.

The event, in support of Children’s Medical Research Institute, was held at The Sofitel Wentworth earlier in May. It involved live music, professional dancers teaching kids some new moves, a lively dance floor, photo booth, balloon sculpting and loads of fun for all involved.

There was a heart-breaking speech by Rene Nel, and her six-year-old daughter Linke, about going through cancer treatment and an interview by The Denim Disco’s young committee members with ProCan’s general manager Dr Brett Tully.
It is the brainchild of Meg Tudehope and Alethea Flynn and raised almost $100,000 for Children’s Medical Research Institute’s project.
Children’s Medical Research Institute’s Head of Fundraising Andrew Kelly said the response from those who attended the event was overwhelming.
“At Children’s Medical Research Institute, we think of cancer as a family disease – the diagnosis of one family member will inevitably influence everyone else,’’ Mr Kelly said.
“The generosity and sacrifice directed toward ProCan through the Kid’s Denim Disco, will mean this world-first project will have the resources and people earlier to bring this vision of the future to reality.
“I cannot think of a more appropriate event to help secure our greatest national treasure – our children.’’

Mr Kelly said he would like to thank all the sponsors involved:
