This course is open to animal-based researchers and staff of the Westmead Research Hub (Children’s Medical Research Institute, Kid’s Research, Westmead Institute of Medical Research and the Western Sydney Local Health District) who is confirmed by his/her AEC Principal Investigator to be part of or is already named in an active Animal Ethics Project under the CMRI/CHW Animal Ethics Committee and the WSLHD Animal Ethics Committee.

The next scheduled Animal User Training Course will be held on Thursday 19 March 2020.  Registration will close on Friday 21 February 2020.

Under the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, 8th Edition 2013, Section 2.4.4 (v) “Investigators must undertake education and training, and competency assessment, in accordance with institutional and AEC policies and procedures.”   The course consists of lecture with a short quiz and practical sessions.
The overall aim of this course is to provide personnel using animals for scientific purposes with the knowledge and practical skills to ensure:
  • compliance with the legislation
  • humane and ethical use of animals
  • minimisation of risks associated with the use of animals 
Program overview
Morning session:   8:30am to 12:00pm
Lecture on animal ethics & welfare, biology, genetics, handling, surgery, euthanasia, biosecurity and related topics
Afternoon session:  12:45pm to 2:45pm
Practical training workshop on rodent handling and compound/drug administration using common biomethodology techniques, anaesthesia & analgesia and euthanasia
Assigned readings and written examination
Certificate of completion
$120 ex-GST – When registering you will be required to provide your Department ID/Cost Code and name and email address of your AEC Principal Investigator.
Please note that the Course Organisers request a minimum of 72 hours notice for cancellations.  Cancellations made without 72 hours notice but prior to the training day will incur a late cancellation fee.  No shows or cancellations made on the day of the sessions incur the full fee
