Professor Patrick Tam, whose volume of work includes a ‘fate map’ of the early embryo, has been awarded the highest level of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Research Fellowship.

The Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) researcher was given the honour this week when the Fellowships for 2011 were announced by the Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing.

Professor Tam is deputy director of CMRI and heads its Embryology Research Unit. His research focuses on developing a blueprint for how the body develops – how cells within the embryo develop into the different parts of the body and how that development is controlled.

NHMRC Research Fellowships exist to provide opportunities for outstanding biomedical and health researchers with proven track records, enabling them to perform research of major importance in their fields of interest, benefiting Australian health and medical research. Fellowships are highly sought after and competitive, with recipients usually in the top 10% of their fields. Only eighty-six Research Fellowships were awarded across Australia for 2011, 14 of these in NSW.

“Children’s Medical Research Institute is very fortunate to have such a talented scientist as Patrick Tam,” said CMRI Director Professor Roger Reddel. “In addition to performing outstanding research, he is a wonderful contributor to the quality of research throughout the institute and has been a valuable mentor to up-and-coming Australian researchers.”
