Event Date: 31 May, 2010
Science Teachers’ Forum
Monday 31st May, 2010
9.45am – 4.30pm
The Science Teachers’ Forum gives teachers an insight into medical research and provides up-to-date information on research findings and techniques. The content is highly relevant to the HSC Biology syllabus and is a valuable resource for teaching most secondary science courses.
The Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) has a strong commitment to raising awareness of medical research and genetic disease: these developments will affect all of us. Details of our research can be found at www.cmri.org.au.
Many schools have already had contact with CMRI through our Jeans for Genes® fundraising campaign and School Speaking programmes. Schools are fantastic supporters of Jeans for Genes Day and the Teachers’ Forum is one way that we can give back to the community and contribute to science education.
The Forum will include an introduction to the use of Gene Technology in medical research, followed by captivating presentations from senior scientists. These lectures will describe the use of molecular biology with illustrations from research outcomes from CMRI units focusing on cancer, neuroscience, gene therapy and embryology.
Lectures will be followed by hands-on laboratory demonstrations covering modern research techniques such as DNA extraction and electrophoresis.
A session on the social and ethical issues raised by new developments in genetic science will be presented by the Centre for Genetics Education (www.genetics.com.au).
Lunch, morning and afternoon tea will be provided. A charge of $55 (inclusive of GST) will be made to cover the costs of refreshments and lecture notes.
Places are extremely limited. Please RSVP as soon as possible to secure a place. To book, print and complete this faxback form and fax to Chris Downie on (02) 9687 2120, no later than Friday 21st May 2010. For further information contact Debbie Singh on 02 9687 2800 or email dsingh@cmri.org.au . (Forums are held in May and November each year).
