Stanniocalcins

While searching for genes that undergo an alteration of their function when cells become immortalised, we identified two hormone-like proteins called stanniocalcin 1 and 2 (STC1 and STC2).  Recent evidence suggests that these proteins may have a role in various cancers, including breast cancer.  Together with Drs Edna Hardeman and Peter Gunning of the School of Medical Sciences, University of NSW, we are studying the effects of these proteins in mice by manipulating the activity levels of the STC1 and STC2 genes.
