Children's Medical Research Institute Redevelopment Campaign

At CMRI, our current space and facilities are close to overall capacity. We have immediate plans for a two stage, $65 million, state-of-the-art and environmentally sustainable redevelopment on the existing CMRI site. This plan will expand the current two-storey, 5,000 sq.m. facility to approximately 15,000 sq.m. by the construction of two new towers, fully integrated with the existing building. Research will continue unhindered during the redevelopment. It is anticipated that the first stage of construction will commence in early 2013, thanks in major part to a $20 million grant from the New South Wales Government, and be completed in 2014. Our proposed redevelopment is part of the ongoing development plans for the whole of the Westmead campus, intended to create a world-leading research precinct. CMRI has planning approval to also add three more building stages and a further 10,000 sq.m. of capacity, as the need arises. By expanding our laboratory space and capabilities, we will be able to maximise our research potential and take our discoveries to the next level for the benefit of our children – and theirs.

Our vision is to:

  • Expand our teams of scientists to further develop our core research programs
  • Increase our number of research groups, recruiting or developing scientific leaders of the future
  • Provide training places for over 100 PhD students
  • Develop the capabilities of CellBank Australia and our Biomedical Proteomics Facility in greater support of Australian scientists
  • Create extra support jobs and expanded fundraising teams

Some of the features of our new facility include:

  • A centralized technology core that supports research activities in each of the research wings as they come online.
  • State-of-the art research laboratory zones, to reflect the planned research groups
  • Energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable air conditioning (AC) design, featuring modular AC systems with high redundancy for business-critical processes and instrumentation.
  • Dedicated space for the Biomedical Proteomics Facility (Including the ACRF Centre for Kinomics) , including customised operational, research and training areas
  • Tailored space for CellBank Australia allowing multiple incubation and work zones
  • Expanded and improved Bioservices configuration and fixtures
  • Library, training, conference/lecture spaces to accommodate our needs and host Westmead Research Hub activities
  • Physical connection to adjacent Institute premises to facilitate Westmead Research Hub partners’ sharing of core technology and core facilities, such as the Biomedical Proteomics Facility.
