The Children’s Medical Research Institute is housed in a purpose-built facility at Westmead, in Sydney’s western suburbs. A combination of world-leading expertise and state-of-the-art research equipment provide an environment that enables rapid progress together with the highest quality results.
The Institute is home to a major Mass Spectrometry Facility which allows the detailed analysis and rapid identification of proteins. CMRI offers a Mass Spectrometry Service for use by other researchers.
CMRI also hosts CellBank Australia – a repository of laboratory grown cell lines from international and national researchers. The repository provides a source of quality controlled cell lines available for use by all Australian scientists.
Other core facilities at the Children’s Medical Research Institute include:
- Gel analysis suite including a Storm Phosphorimager
- Fluorescence and confocal microscopy suite
- Live Cell Imaging Microscope
- Quantitative PCR
- Flow cytometry
- In-house bioservices and transgenic mouse facility
- In-house specialised tissue culture media production laboratory
- Robotic in situ hybridisation machine
- Gene therapy human applications laboratory in conjunction with the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
CMRI scientists have an extremely broad range of expertise across all areas of molecular biology and cellular biology, with specialist expertise in the areas of:
- Mouse embryology including whole mouse embryo culture, micromanipulation, electroporation, tissue grafting and tetraploid mouse chimera production
- Transgenic and knock-out mouse production
- Protein expression, purification and assay techniques
- Cytogenetics
- Mouse muscle function testing facilities, including whole muscle and whole limb strength and exercise performance testing
- Mouse behavioural testing.
Westmead Research Hub
CMRI is located in the same campus as the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Hospital and the Westmead Millennium Institute. The research facilities of all these organisations comprise the Westmead Research Hub. This provides a cooperative environment in which major pieces of equipment and scientific expertise can be shared for a more cost-effective and efficient approach to research.
