The Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) facility was the first custom built biomedical research facility in NSW and its unique design enables our research to be conducted in a truly coordinated way. While the Institute was established in 1958, we have been in our current building since 1992.
CMRI is located at the Westmead campus along with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Westmead Hospital and Westmead Millennium Institute. Together, these organisations form the Westmead Research Hub – a cooperative research environment where equipment and scientific expertise can be shared for a superior, efficient and cost-effective approach to research. CMRI has departmental status within the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney and links with several other Australian and international universities.
The Institute is home to a major Mass Spectrometry Facility that allows detailed analysis and identification of proteins.
The Australian Cancer Research Foundation Chemical Proteomics Centre for Kinomics, supported by Ramaciotti is located both at CMRI and at the University of Newcastle. The Centre, the first of its kind in Australia, will enable better understanding of current therapies and their unwanted side effects, as well as the development of new drugs for a multitude of human diseases, many of which are currently without any drug treatment.
CMRI also hosts the CellBank Australia – a facility providing cell lines to the research community both within Australia and overseas.
