December 2002
From 14th to 24th December the residents of Albany St, Point Frederick, will be putting on a spectacular show of homes festooned with Christmas lights …but it’s not just for Christmas.
The fabulous display will be shining a light into the future by helping to raise much needed funds for research aimed at preventing childhood disease.
It is the brain wave of the Gosford Committee of the Children’s Medical Research Institute to turn a Christmas tradition of lighting up the neighbourhood into a fundraising success-story.
Last year people came from far and wide to view the festive street and the Committee raised over $3,500 by passing through the crowds with their collection buckets. This year they hope to do even better.
All proceeds go to the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) where the scientists have a singular goal – the prevention of childhood suffering. CMRI scientists focus on the fundamental processes of human development and the genes that control that development. Understanding what is normal is the first step in understanding what can go wrong to cause disease.
In the last few years the researchers at CMRI have made some significant discoveries that may lead to new treatments for cancer, epilepsy, muscle diseases and many other genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and haemophilia. But there is still a long way to go.
Progress is slow and painstaking but with the support of the Australian community every small step is a step in the right direction – a healthier future for all children.
By taking a step down Albany St between 14 and 24 December you can help this great cause. The festivities will kick off with a Picnic in the Park from 5pm on the 14th. And on Sunday 22nd December, the Gosford City Brass Band and the Central Coast Conservatorium Junior and Senior Choir, will be on hand to entertain the crowds from 7.30pm.
